25 YEARS AGO - FRIDAY MARCH 22, 1985

FRIDAY last marked the launch – at an informal gathering in Stonehaven's Commodore Hotel- of a new book by local historian, antiquarian and author Mr Archibald Watt Rutlands, Arduthie Road, which is surely destined to become an indispensable "standard" reference work for all with an interest in matters historic.

"Highways and Byways Round Kincardine" is an admirable follow-up to Mr Watt's earlier and much acclaimed "Highway and Byways Round Stonehaven" and is thoroughly deserving of enjoying the same – if not even wider- success.

The author observes that most readers will be astonished at the number or "precious things" they have not seen (in Kincardineshire) not because they are so distant, but because they live so near them. The book, the end result of many, many years of painstaking research, is printed in nine sections, featuring nine roughly circular "drives" all beginning from Market Square, Stonehaven.

WOODEN huts used as offices by Kincardine and Deeside District Council staff who enforce building standards would fail to comply with present day construction standards.

A report by an environmental health director revealed defects in the temporary huts used to house his department for the past 20 years.

Lower Deeside Councillor Dr Ted Needham commented that it was "ridiculous" that the place from where people enforced building laws did not itself meet with the council's own regulations.

50 YEARS AGO - Friday March 25 1960

A YOUNG lady well known in Inverbervie, Miss Pamela Chassar, who is employed by Eagle Airways, was recently chosen "Miss Eagle Airways". She reached the last 15 for the title of "Miss London Airport," and just missed being in the last three.

In addition to Stonehaven, the trains, each of which will have a modern restaurant car with seating for 33, will call at Dundee, Arbroath and Montrose.

100 YEARS AGO - Friday March 24 1910

AT the Sheriff Court yesterday, Edward G Watson, Bervie, pleaded guilty to having stolen from a clothes line at Gourdon, six articles of underclothing, and three articles from another clothes line.

In reply to the Sheriff, the accused said he found the thing son the road, took them home, and forgot to return them. The Sheriff said the accused story was a far fetched one.

He asked the Fiscal if accused had been in trouble before, to which the Fiscal replied in the affirmative. The Sheriff did not think he could give him t/he benefit of the First Offenders Act, but was dealing leniently with him in imposing a fine of 1, or 10 days imprisonment.
