STONEHAVEN Leisure Centre, built by Kincardine and Deeside District Council with the aid of a Scottish Tourist Board grant, was officially opened on Wednesday by board chairman Mr Alan Devereux.

Before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the opening of the 650,000 centre at Queen Elizabeth Park, Mr Devereux described the building as a "significant enhancement of facilities which represents a clear-cut and long-term commitment by the district council to the development of tourism."

The board's 200,000 stake in Stonehaven Leisure Centre was the largest single authority project to get cash backing during the financial year, he said.

Portlethen residents are demanding the re-instatment of what they claim is a right-of-way from Bruntland Road at Westside Farm to Cairnwell junction.

But Kincardine and Deeside District Council's planning committee was told last week that a previous investigation concluded in January 1984 that the alleged right-of-way through Portlethen Moss did not exist.

50 YEARS AGO - Friday June 3 1960

THE 1960 season at Stonehaven swimming pool got off to a grand start last weekend.

Although there was a cool breeze on Saturday afternoon, 800 bathers and spectators heard Provost T Christie perform the opening, and on Sunday the bright sunshine brought 670 bathers and 640 spectators to make a scene reminiscent of high summer.

Two Gourdon fishing boats had to return to port on Wednesday when their skippers took ill at sea, and a third boat was towed in when a seine net rope "wound up" her propeller.

The skippers who were taken ill were Mr John R Cargill, 7 Hillfoot Terrace, of the Jacqueline and Mr Charles Craig, Brae Road, of the Concord, both of which were engaged in line fishing.

Anxious eyes are being cast on the River Cowie these days. The continued near drought has lowered the level of the water alarmingly and, while there is no question yet of a water shortage, the condition of the river bed is not too good.

In fact, it is fast returning to the conditions of last summer, when it was good neither for its own fish population nor for those living in the vicinity.

100 YEARS AGO - Thursday June 2 1910

A BALL was held in the Jubilee Hall last week for the purpose of bidding farewell to the large number of emigrants leaving for Canada and other places in the Far West.

About 90 couples assembled. Dancing commenced about half-past eight and was kept up with spirit until an early hour in the morning to music supplied by Mr Davidson's string band from Culter.

A common expression a short time ago might very appropriately be altered to "Has anybody seen the Comet?" That luminary has been keeping well out of sight except to a fortunate few who possess glasses of sufficient power to locate it.

One of the favoured star-gazers last week was the U.F minister of Kinneff who afforded a few of his friends an opportunity of seeing the comet through his powerful telescope. It is said that some of the party were so impressed with what they saw that they suggested that others in the parish should be afforded an opportunity of seeing Halley's Comet, and in order that all should be on equal footing the church bell was set in motion.
