TOO much glass in the fabric of Viewmount, Stonehaven – HQ of Kincardine and Deeside District Council – has ruled out any possibility of the building being used as a "bunker" to house essential personnel to carry on civic administration in the event of a nuclear attack.

Mr Tom Hyder, the authority's finance director, who is also responsible for civil defence matters, said at Thursday's meeting of the policy and resources committee, that conversion/ alterations would therefore be "impractical".

He made his observation during a discussion about a Scottish Home and Health Department paper concerning C.D. Matters – which Councillor William Eddie said was a "complete waste of time and money," and Councillor Jack Emslie labelled as "crazy".

Nevertheless, officials are to "cast around" for an alternative location for a "bunker bolt-hole".

WAS the Rev. James Tindall Soutter, the 74 year-old retired minister who disappeared from his Edinburgh home two months ago, in Stonehaven?

That question was asked at the weekend when, following the publication of his description, a lady in Cowie reported that she had seen someone very like him. It was on August 14 that she noticed an elderly gentleman eating sandwiches at the gable of her house. When she went out, he was very apologetic, as though he was intruding. She assured him that he was not, and offered to lend him a deck chair.

The offer was accepted and, on her return to work after lunch, she left him seated in it. He was still there at 5pm.

The following day he was again at Cowie eating his lunchtime sandwiches but on that occasion left quickly. He was "very vague and not too well looking". The lady reported the matter to police when she saw the description of Mr Soutter, but their enquiries have so far not revealed that he actually stayed in the town.

On Saturday, an amended description of the clothes Mr Soutter was wearing when he left home was issued, and this tallied with those worn by the man seen at Cowie.

At the time of his disappearance Mr Soutter was worried about his wife, who was seriously ill in a nursing home. He had his passport in his possession, and she fears he may be suffering from loss of memory and has gone to the Continent.

FOR some time rumours have been current that a well-known mill owner in the southern part of the county contemplates starting a mill in Stonehaven.

The site is further given as Cowie, and some of the parties seem to speak of it almost as an accomplished fact. We are afraid that the wish is father to the thought, as on making inquiry at those best qualified to know we are informed that nothing is known as to such intention.

A new mill or two would be a great benefit to the town at the present time.

MR D. BREMNER, bandmaster of the Gordons (Territorials), Aberdeen, entered on his duties as instructor of the Town Band on Tuesday night.

There was several of the old members of the band back in their places, and several new recruits. Councillor John Mitchell, the convenor, and Bailie Thomson, representing the Band Committee introduced the new instructor, and expressed the hope that the members would derive benefit from the instruction.
