ANNIVERSARY FLOWER SHOW A PURE DELIGHT
Horticultural Society "ABSOLUTELY delighted," was President Geoff Lawrence's response at the conclusion of Benholm and Johnshaven Horticultural Society's 50th Anniversary Flower Show in the Village Hall on Saturday afternoon.
The Show had indeed been a delight. Bright sunshine outside, while inside the hall there was a golden and welcoming feeling for the 200 visitors who had gone along to appreciate the diverse talents of the exhibitors. Encouragingly , too, the 520 entries showed an overall increase of 49 over last year. The baking section was particularly strong, up by 32. Only the roses, industrial and pot plants experienced a slight decrease.
As always the afternoon teas were enjoyed by the many who found their way to the small hall while the keen bidding for the auction items created much merriment as welcome funds for the Society.
A lot of hard work goes into the organisation of a Flower Show and Vice-President, Mrs Wilma Armatage thanked all who had helped to make Saturday's such a great success and the trophies were presented by Mrs K. Gammie of the Kirktown Garden Centre, Stonehaven as follows.

Any horticultural society is an asset to a community, not only because it encourages individuals to develop their skills but it also provides a platform for their achievements. The Benholm and Johnshaven Horticultural Society has striven to do this for half a century despite the fact that village life in 2009 is very different to that of 1959 . The turnout at Saturday's Flower Show clearly indicates that the Society has the support of the community and it is to be hoped that this support will see the Society through another 50 wonderful years.
N.E.O.S.
While "Creative Capital of the County" might be pushing it a bit, there can be little doubt that the contribution of Benholm and Johnshaven to this year's North East Open Studios with a total of 15 participants exhibiting in ten different venues is exceptional. In the Lifeboat House - the Coastal Colourists, local artists working in a variety of styles and Hector Christie, photography. Starfish Studio, 3 Anchor Lane - Kate MacKenzie, acrylics and mixed media and Brazen Hussies Designs, jewellery. 12 Main Street, The Gallery – Ranjit Barry's Rainbow Glass, jewellery, Alison Stewart, seascapes and Hilary Firth's Stargazing, pottery. The Wee Studio, 4 Main Street – Pam Hamilton, acrylics. Apple Cottage Garden Studio, 1-3 Mid Street - The Apple Cottage Company, textiles and Tracey Blease, contemporary jewellery. 29 Castle Street – A Week and Three Days, printmaking, drawing, painting. The Retreat, 27 South Street – Chris Hulton, acrylics. Blue Garage, 10 Waughton Place – Morag Smith, painting. 3 Beach Road – Susan Main's Beach Road Framers, , framing service. Mill of Benholm – Cath Roberts, painting and also the Mill itself, surrounds, craft shop and tearoom.
For the benefit of those visitors who might not be familiar with the village a location trail will be available from any of the venues.
NEOS runs for the sixth time from Saturday, September 12 to Monday, September 21. Individual opening times vary, although most have a late opening on Tuesdays. Full details, however, are contained in the free catalogue which is available locally from the Starfish Studio, 3 Anchor Lane.
Putting
On a truly miserable night when the rain just got heavier and heavier the 2009 competitive putting season reached its conclusion.
In a three-way play- off for the Wairds Park Trophy (The Cup), Michael Craig and Ewan McCallum both recorded rounds of 38 while Keith Brown's 40 saw him eliminated. In the match play final Ewan defeated Michael after six extra holes.
This year's Champion of Champions is David Smith who defeated Ewan McCallum one up in a very closely contested final. In the semi-finals David defeated Michael Craig three and two while Ewan defeated Alison Milne after six extra holes. Despite, or perhaps because of, the heavy conditions, scoring throughout the evening was low and included Ewan McCallum and Alison Beedie halving the fourth extra hole in one – a rare occurrence.
In a battle of the brothers Findlay McCallum defeated the younger Rhurie 4 and 3 to become Junior Champion of Champions.
The winner of the evening's consolation competition was Jean Stephen who defeated Fiona Anderson three and two in the final.
The annual presentation of trophies and Seniors versus Juniors match will take place on Sunday, October 4 at 2 p.m.
Bowling Club
There was no luck for the Bowling Club's representatives at the Champion of Champions pairs competition at the Stonehaven Recreation Grounds at the week-end, both Mary Brebner and Bett Beedie and Alan Robbie and Bryan Duff being eliminated in the first round.
The outcome was no better at the Kincardineshire Bowling League's round robin at Stonehaven on Sunday, although Bill Inglis, Jim Brebner, Bill Webster and Alan Black had the satisfaction of winning two of their five matches.
Friday' hat night winners were Alan Black and Bill Inglis by a margin of 13 shots.
Hat nights continue on Tuesday and Fridays at 7 p.m. All welcome.
Forty six shots ahead after the first leg, the Bowling Club's team should be confident of returning from Bervie on Sunday with the TSB Trophy securely in their grasp. They will have to be at their best, however, remembering as they no doubt will that Bervie held a 47-shot lead after last year's first leg.
Music at Benholm Kirk
Just a reminder that Johnshaven's "Duo Costa" (Rory Comerford and Bob Dunsire) will be playing a selection of Spanish and Latin American music for guitar in Benholm Kirk tonight (Friday) at 7.30 p.m.
Wee Stories
Don't forget either the Wee Stories production of "The Sun, the Moon and a Boy called River" in the Village Hall on Thursday, September 10. Created, directed and performed by Iain Johnstone and Andy Cannon, the show begins at 7 p.m., lasts for about one hour and is suitable for all ages from five upwards. Tickets, priced 8 and concessions 6 are available from the Johnshaven Stores or on 01561 361956.
Community Council
The next meeting of the Community Council will be held in the Village Hall (small) on Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. Items for the agenda should be in the hands of the Chair, Chris Greene, Cha –na-Mar by Monday, September 7.
