BOWLERS PLANNING FOR NEW SEASON
Bowling Club THERE was an excellent turnout of members at the Annual General Meeting of the Bowling Club in the Wairds Park Community Clubroom on Sunday afternoon.
In presenting his annual report, President Alan Robbie said that the bowling green opened on Sunday, April 19 for the start of the Club's Silver Jubilee Year with Sheila Simpson bowling the first jack as she had done at the official opening of the green 25 years ago.
It was not the brightest of starts for Mr Robbie personally, however, as he suffered his first defeat as President in the annual match against the Vice-President. Then the Carpet Fund committee's open seven ends could not be held because of an excess of moss on the carpet and health problems affecting some members. Luckily, though, things improved as the season progressed.
One of the highlights of the year undoubtedly was at last having a flag pole and flag flying above the green and, although it took 25 years to achieve, it was well worth the wait. The pupils of the Primary School produced some great designs but Mr Robbie had no doubt that the right choice had been made with Holly Chandler's entry. Thanks also went to Eck O'Brien for donating and erecting the flag pole and to Allen Smith both for supplying and transferring the design on to the flag.
On the green the club had an up-and-down season. A highlight was winning back the TSB Trophy from Bervie. A lead of 46 shots from the first leg might have seemed conclusive, Mr Robbie said, but remembering the 47 point drubbing at Bervie the previous season, there was no over-confidence in the ranks. On the day, though, the team all played well and got the required result. Although it was disappointing to finish second bottom in the Kincardineshire League, this was perhaps not surprising, Mr Robbie said, considering that most of the previous year's very strong home rink had no longer been available.
Nevertheless, some very good results were achieved, strangely enough against teams who were at the top of the league at the time. The President was sure, however, that performances would be better this year and he complimented all the new members on the quality of their bowling and their dedication to the club.
The open seven ends was played a bit later this year and, blessed by fine weather, was the best supported for a number of years and Mr Robbie thanked Bett and Liz for making such a first class job of the catering.
Domestically, congratulations went to Donald and Fiona for a family double in the singles' championships. The Junior competition attracted eight players, the winner being David Beedie, Mr Robbie expressing the hope that more youngsters, the club's future, could be encouraged to come along. The hat nights were well attended and: "Isn't it amazing", he said, "what the thought of winning a Mars Bar does to your competitive edge!"
Turning his attention to the social side of the club, the President said that the presentation of trophies was again a great success in the Wairds Park Community Hall and he expressed his appreciation to Jennifer at Hillside Catering, Stan and Eddie for ensuring that the dance floor was never empty and to Sheila for carrying out the presentations and all she does for the club at different events.
He also thanked Fiona and Donald for organising the hamper and Mary and Helen for staffing the stall at the Christmas fair. Due to the severe weather the New Year's Day outing was held in the Village Hall where the 12 members who attended had an enjoyable time both on the short mat and tucking into the savouries, clootie dumpling included, afterwards.
Drawing his report to a conclusion Mr Robbie made reference to the disastrous flooding of the bowling green and praised the Wairds Park committee for the urgency with which they had tackled the problem. Further bad weather had delayed the remedial work but hopefully the new wall will prevent any further flooding and, with a new carpet and a new entrance, the club will once again have a bowling green to be proud of.
Mr Robbie ended his report by thanking the office-bearers and committee for all their support throughout the season, commenting that he was proud to be President of a club with so many dedicated members.
The balance sheet, presented by treasurer, Bill Inglis, showed income of 1,753 and expenditure of 1,473 and cash assets of 5,663.
Office-bearers and committee elected for 2010:
President, Alan Robbie. Vice-President, Clark Simpson. Secretary, Donald Dundas. Treasurer, Bill Inglis.
Committee: Ann Aitken, Helen Bartlett, Hugh Bartlett, Bett Beedie, Alan Black, Fiona Dundas, Bryan Duff, Margaret Hann, Isabel Inglis, , Sam McDonald, Eck O'Brien, Roy Mowatt, Bill Webster.
After a bright start in their penultimate match in the Kincardineshire Indoor League the club's rink was beaten 25-11 by Stonehaven IBC.
World Day of Prayer
There was an excellent attendance from the south coastal parishes at the World Day of Prayer service in Johnshaven Church on Friday afternoon.
Based on the theme, "Let everything that has breath praise God", the order of service was written by the Christian women of Cameroon and led by Mrs Christine Murray. The Voices were Mrs Wilma Armatage, Mrs Frances Blake, Mrs Pat Greaves, Mrs Maureen James, Mrs Jean Stephen and Miss Betty Stuart and the Reader was Mrs Isabel Blease. The organist and soloist was Mr John Gove who, during the intermission, also played "Sheep May Safely Graze" on a piano kindly donated by the relatives of the late Mrs Betty McCreadie, a former committee member of the Guild.
Mearns Coastal Parish
In the absence of locum minister, Mr Gordon Anderson, Sunday morning's service in Johnshaven Church was conducted by Miss Annie Thomson, a Church of Scotland Lay Reader in the Presbytery of Angus.
Referring to the negative responses which sometimes can follow natural disasters such as those which recently have destroyed so many lives, Miss Thomson said that their faith always ensures that Christians are to the forefront of relief.
The organist was Robin Beattie.
This Sunday's services will be held at the usual times of 10 a.m. in St Cyrus Church and 11.30 a.m. in Johnshaven Church.
Mearns Coastal Guild
In the absence of President, Mrs Jean Cook, recuperating from illness, Vice-President Mrs Christine Murray welcomed members to the fortnightly meeting of the Guild in the Church Hall on Monday afternoon. The speaker was Carolyn Fishbourne from the Grampian Society for the Blind who gave a most enlightening talk on the varied causes and cures of blindness in both the young and the old.
The Bible reading was given by Mrs Isabel Blease and the vote of thanks proposed by Miss Nan Mills.
The next meeting of the Guild will be the leisure hour in the Church Hall on Monday, March 22 at 2.30 p.m. when the Rev L. Broadley from Hillside will give a talk on cookery.
The Guild will be holding a daffodil tea/coffee morning in the Church Hall tomorrow (Saturday) from 10 until 11.30 a.m. There will also be a sales table and a raffle. Admission is free. Refreshments 1.50. All welcome.

The past is always with us
Last year the Bowling Club finished second bottom of the Kincardineshire League but 20 years ago they did very much better, their AGM reporting a second top finish, just behind Newtonhill B.C., while also completing a hat trick of victories over Bervie B.C. for the TSB Trophy.
