BOWLING RINKS BEATEN
Bowling Club The Bowling Club's 2010 Kincardineshire League campaign got off to a disappointing start on Thursday night when, in conditions much more akin to March than May, both rinks were beaten by Newtonhill B.C.
On a bitterly cold night of wind, rain and sleet at Newtonhill, Roy Mowatt, Brian Hann, Fiona Fundas and Alan Robbie never got to grips either with the conditions or their opponents and were heavily defeated, 27-3 by L. Taylor, W. Skinner, W. Barclay and R. Taylor.
At Johnshaven, the rink of Meggie Hann, Bill Inglis, Bett Beedie and Bryan Duff fared much better against D. Wyness, A. Gordon, P. O'Hara and K. Barclay but not enough to force a victory. After seven ends they were ahead by one shot, 5-4, but then suffered a drought, winning only one end out of the next seven, when the visiting skip was in top form, to trail by six shots (6-12).
With two still to play, the situation was not completely without hope but, bravely as they battled, two singles was the best they could manage, finishing on the wrong end of a 12-8 scoreline.
There was a very good turnout on Friday for the first hat night of the season. All the games were closely contested, the winners being Donald Dundas and Bryan Duff by a margin of six shots.
Hat nights continue on Fridays and points nights on Tuesdays, both at 7 p.m. and all are welcome.
At the week-end Bett Beedie and Alan Robbie represented the club at the Emslie Collier Invitation Mixed Pairs event at Inverbervie B.C.
Performing admirably in an entry of 24, their wins by 12 shots against Edzell B.C. and 5 shots against Fettercairn B.C. in Saturday's round robin section saw them through to Sunday's quarter finals where they were eliminated by opponents from the host club.
R.N.L.I.
There was no shortage of potential bargains, or buyers, at the "New to You" sale in the Village Hall on Saturday which raised the excellent total of 1,070 for the funds of the R.N.L.I. and the organisers wish to thank all whose generous donations and purchases made the event such a success.
However, the sale was tinged with some sadness because, missing from the among the helpers was 87 year-old Mrs Jean Cook who retired at the last committee meeting after 46 years' sterling service as a member of the Benholm and Johnshaven Guild.
Celebrating her birthday, Jean was unable to be in the hall at all on Saturday and so was presented at home with a card and a bouquet in appreciation to her practical support of the R.N.L.I. over so many years.
This time last year Jean was awarded a silver badge from the R.N.L.I. for her services as a member of the Benholm and Johnshaven Guild for more than 40 years.

Correction to Quiz
Apologies for giving the wrong answer to question 10 in last week's sports quiz. Montrose F.C. won only five LEAGUE games during season 2009/10 but they did win three others - in the Scottish Cup.
The first was a battling 3-0 win against Junior club Banks o' Dee at Spain Park on what must surely have been the worst day of wind and torrential rain ever to have been suffered by a group of travelling supporters.
The second was a heart-stopping 2-1 victory against East Fife from Division 2 at Links Park, and the third was at Meadowbank Stadium where they saw off the doughty Edinburgh City by three goals to one. Only the true anorak would have spotted that error!
The past is never far away
Tonight the Brownies are providing the entertainment at a concert in the Village Hall in aid of Christian Aid. Twenty five years ago, led by their Brownie Leader at that time, Mrs Eileen Anderson, they had an exciting time on an exceptional fine day during a particular gloomy spell of weather, when they attended the biennial Brownie Revels at Arbuthnott
Part of a gathering of 400 from all over Kincardine and Deeside, they took part in a number of activities associated with Brownie Guiding including such things as preparing a 75th anniversary cake, playing games from 75 years ago and making a commemorative jig-saw.
Many will still have fond memories of the event especially no doubt the camp fire and rousing sing-song at the end led by St Cyrus Brownie Guiders, Mrs Kathleen Masson and Mrs Norma Pittendreich.
That same week many of the young girls would have joined in the celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of VE Day. Again to the fore was Mrs Eileen Anderson who, along with Mrs Judy Stephen, arranged the event and most of the village's youngsters turned out on a bitterly cold night singing and dancing to tunes both old and new while also enjoying an abundance of food and juice provided by friends and neighbours.
Happy days!
