CARTIES SET TO ROLL AGAIN

THE wheels are already in motion for the sixth annual Catterline Cartie Challenge and it's time to start signing up if you want to take part. The Challenge takes place during the Catterline Gala which this year takes place on June 12 and 13, with the Carties on Sunday.

The teams that took part last year have already been invited to enter the 2010 event, and entries from new teams are now being accepted - but places are filling up fast.

The Carties course runs from the Creel Inn down the brae to the harbour. People racing can expect to reach speeds of up to 30mph. All vehicles taking part are inspected beforehand for safety reasons.

The race has gained national status with people from as far afield as Nottingham travelling to the coastal village to take part. This year teams have already signed up from Lincolnshire and Ayrshire.

Cartie Challenge organiser Stephen Hall said: "About half the places are gone already and at the current rate we are expecting the places to be gone within a few weeks. I would recommend signing up now, before it's too late. "

Carts taking part will be on display at the gala the day before and there will be prizes awarded to the "Best Designed" and "Best Engineered" examples.

The winner of the race is presented with the Connons Shield and is hailed as the "Supreme Champion". There will also be prizes for the Cartie Sprint race, a Constructors Trophy for the best aggregate time and a "Champagne Moment" for the most memorable incident of the day.

There will also be some new features this year, including a radar speed gun to get everyone's top speed as they cross the finish line, and a Gravity Sidecar.

The Gravity Sidecar allows two people to race down the hill at the same time on the same cart. Stephen said: "It involves a bit more teamwork and will be quite exciting for people leaning out around corners - it should be good fun to watch."
