defences set up in Fettercairn to protect the village did work “as expected” on December 23 when flooding affected the area.
However, homes and businesses in Fettercairn were still awash in the early hours when Cauldcotts Burn burst its banks - despite the flood alleviation scheme having been put in place.
Speaking at Tuesday’s Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee meeting, area manager Willie Munro explained that the measures did work but the unprecedented volume of water which fell that morning meant that there was too much for the attenuation area to cope with.
Local councillor for the area, Dave Stewart, questioned why some of the local residents’ ideas had not been taken up when flood defences were originally put in place.
He said: “Before (flood measures in) Fettercairn were put in place the people told the council and their experts what was needed and they weren’t listened to.

‘‘The burn’s river bed is now two or three feet higher than it was 100 years ago and nothing was done about it.”
Cllr Stewart said he hoped that local people were listened to as well as officials when flooding was discussed.
Mr Munro added: “Throughout this, a lot of time has been spent listening to people with local knowledge.
‘‘Yes people will be consulted and their views will be taken into account and opinions listened to.”
Those affected by December’s flooding are being invited to a multi-agency meeting in Stonehaven next Tuesday, January 29.
The meeting will mainly focus on flooding in Stonehaven, but issues affecting other areas, such as Fettercairn, will also be discussed.
