Field 52 unsuitable for supermarket
LAND on the outskirts of Stonehaven which had been earmarked as a potential site for a supermarket has been deemed unsuitable by the Scottish Government.
Councillors approved the site at a meeting of the Kincardine and Mearns area committee last year, agreeing that they would support a supermarket application there – but only if the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route did not go ahead.
The site, which is known as Field 52, was given a certificate of appropriate alternative development (CAAD) by councillors. The certificate added value to the land, which Transport Scotland would need to buy if they want to build the bypass through the site.
But the certificate has now been withdrawn after Transport Scotland appealed and a government reporter overturned the decision, meaning that even if the bypass does not go through the site, no supermarket can be built there.
Sainsbury’s had said it would build a £23 million supermarket there if given planning permission.
Landowner David Strang Steel has said that he is “disappointed” with the decision and that he is considering whether to re-apply for the CAAD.
Residents in the town who attended a recent public meeting agreed that they would support the idea of a new supermarket in the town, but could not decide on a suitable location.
Stonehaven and District community council have evaluated a number of potential sites including Spurryhillock, New Mains of Ury and Field 52 among others.
