FIRST JACK IS THROWN ON NEW GREEN

Bowling Club With rain an ever-present threat, President, Alan Robbie, raised the Bowling Club flag before welcoming 22 members to the official opening of the bowling green on Sunday afternoon.

Originally scheduled for Sunday, April 18, the opening was unfortunately delayed because of irreparable damage done to the carpet by the November floods.

Measures had begun almost immediately to repair the concrete base but severe frost and a second flooding in January seriously disrupted the work and it was not until a fortnight ago that a new carpet was laid, the third following the founding of the club in 1984.

With bowlers gradually coming to terms with the pace of a new surface, a chill air meant that conditions were far from ideal for a summer sport but they were mastered better in an enjoyable encounter by the President's team who at the conclusion of 10 ends finished worthy winners by 41 shots to 32.

Points nights began on Tuesday and hat nights get going tonight, Friday, at 7 p.m. and all are welcome.

Wairds Park

Whilst flooding of the bowling green may have been a recent source of frustration and irritation for the Bowling Club, it has been a considerable worry for the Wairds Park committee whose responsibility it is, ever since the first major incursion in 2001.

However, steps have now been taken to prevent similar problems from arising in the future. The approach to the green has been opened up by replacing a hedge and fence with a ramp and low dyke, the latter acting as a flood prevention measure while, within the last few days, drainage has been improved along the bottom of the adjoining railway embankment which should ensure that excessive rainwater from the Baron's Pade will not again invade the bowling green.

At the same time the park committee has taken measures to prevent the sports courts being similarly impaired by muddy water by edging the grass verge and laying a tarred approach to the courts.

"A Bosie for Luck?"

Life on the Aberdeenshire farm provided a humdrum existence for Elsie despite having to cope with a weird sister , a husband obsessed with his pet doos, a serving lass and an unpredictable neighbour, none of which she found the least bit exciting.

Elsie didn't realise how lucky she was, though, for suddenly she is swept into a series of events so unexpected and dramatic that that they change the lives of everyone around her - and she feels that she alone is responsible.

Live theatre returns to the Village Hall on Thursday, May 20 at 7.30 p.m. when Fleeman Productions, last here with "Guts", a WWII drama set in an Aberdeen fish-gutting yard, presents "A Bosie For Luck?", a tragic-comedy of rural Aberdeenshire in the 1930s, written by the prolific and prize-winning playwright, Charles Barron, and loosely based on incidents and characters from David Toulmin's short stories, which deal, in his local Buchan dialect, with life in the north –east of Scotland and which were very popular in the 1960s and 70s.

Tickets, priced 9 (6 concessions) are available from the Johnshaven Stores or by phoning 01561 361956.

Horticultural Society

The management committee of the Horticultural Society were more than pleased with the response to their first ever spring garden competition and have announced the winners as follows: First prize of 50 worth of garden centre vouchers, Gracie and Roddy Clark, 21 Mid Street.

Second prize of a compost bin, Eileen Reppe, Mission Cottage, Dock Street. Third prize of flower and stem secateurs, Alison Chandler, Old Home Guard, Fore Street while runner –up, Hilda Peters, 16 South Street won plant labels and the Society wishes to thank Mrs Kate Gammie from the Kirkton Garden Centre, Stonehaven for judging the competition.

The committee also finalised arrangements for the annual plant sale which will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday, May 22 from 1 until 3 pm. Admission is free and tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a donation only.

There will be a home baking stall and a raffle and donations for those and the plant stall (bedding plants, cuttings, bulbs and seeds, unwanted flower pots, seed trays, containers), the key element of course, will be gratefully received at the hall from 12 noon on the day of the sale.

Year in, year out, the plant sale is one of the Society's main fund raisers and the committee is hoping for a good response a fortnight tomorrow when SHARK (Safe Habitat Alliance for Rural Kincardineshire) will also have a presence.

Artists and Makers

Johnshaven Artists and Makers' exhibition in the Lifeboat House at the week-end was extremely successful when, despite the dreich weather, 300 from near and far attended over the two days of the event.

The six members of JAM all exhibited their work along with two guests, Bob Dunsire's guitar added to the enjoyment of the afternoons and the group were able to donate 115 from sales to the Heritage Society who own the Lifeboat House.

JAM has no other event immediately in the pipeline but are looking forward enthusiastically to the future.

In the last edition of the "Eye" there appeared a feature entitled "The Bridges over the Burns of Benholm."
