FRIDAY OCTOBER 26th 1984
SO CONCERNED have Grampian Police at Stonehaven become about the safety of children riding around on bikes without lights, especially in the dusk, when darkness falls or when there is poor visibility, that they warned this week that instead of giving culprits a "wigging" they will in future seriously consider reporting offenders for possible prosecution.
The police, anxious to nip in the bud a potentially serious injury or fatal accident situation, say they feel bound to take such a step because they don't seem to be "getting through" to parents about the absolute necessity for their youngsters' bikes, particularly those of the BMX type, to be properly (and legally) equipped with lights if they are being used on the public highways during lighting-up times.
Responsibility for ensuring their offspring's safety lies firmly on parents' shoulders, the police said.

SCOTTISH authoress Moira Miller, whose forte is writing stories for the younger generation, is visiting Fettercairn Primary School and Inverbervie Library today (Friday), to talk to children from both communities as part of the North-East of Scotland Library Service's continuing 1984 programme of activities for younger readers.

WITH the potato harvest virtually ended, the number of queer-shaped tubers handed in to the office is well down on previous years. Normally we get them in various shapes, sizes and forms, but this year the potatoes are mostly normal or the gatherers are shy. One well-nigh prefect heart-shaped potato has, however, been produced. It was gathered on Mr G. G. Bremner's farm at Milton of Dellavaird, was handed in by Mrs Archibald, 25 Macdonald Road, Stonehaven.

ON SATURDAY last a member of the directors of Stonehaven Gas Company with Mr Vernon, the manager, visited Dundee on the invitation of the Provost and Magistrates to witness the opening of the Gas Lighting Exhibition held in that city. The Exhibition is one of the best of the kind ever held in the country, the latest in gas appliances being shown, and doubtless the deputation picked up some valuable hints.

THE WEEK-NIGHT meets of the Guild open on the 8th November with an "At Home," while on the 22nd of the same month the opening lecture "A trip to the Antarctic" will be given by Dr Soutar, the surgeon of Lieutenant Shackleton's relief ship the Terra Nova. As the lecture will be illustrated by many lime-light views it is sure to prove very interesting. Among the other lectures is Dr Mackie, of Aberdeen, who is famed far and near as a lecturer, and whose subject will be "Life among our sin folks." The Rev. Mr Fraser, Kinneff, who is an authority on the heavens above as well as the earth beneath is to treat of the latter in either describing or producing an earthquake- it was not made clear which. In the event of the latter contingency it might be well to keep his exposition till about the end of the programme. Altogether the syllabus is likely to be a very interesting one.
