FRIENDS OF CARRONHILL SEEK VOLUNTEERS

A BAG packing event aimed at raising money for a special-needs school is in danger of being cancelled due to lack of volunteers.

The event has been organised by Friends of Carronhill in a bid to raise funds for the school which provides nursery, primary and secondary education for children with special education needs.

But it could fail to get off the ground due to a worrying lack of volunteers.

Secretary of the group, Gail Sangster, has appealed for anyone who could spare just an hour or two to put their name forward and help out a good cause.

The group, who pay for the upkeep of the school's wheelchair accessible bus as well as fun activities for the pupils such as trampolining, have been hit by two big bills for the vehicle in recent months and are relying on fundraising events to keep money in the coffers.

Mrs Sangster said: "The bus is starting to cost us an awful lot this year because it is starting to get a bit older. The last couple of months, bills for the upkeep of the bus have been up to 1000 so it is starting to take away all the money that we have raised. It means that there isn't the money for the extras, things like trampolining lessons that they just wouldn't get otherwise."

She added: "We know the school is used quite a lot on Saturdays, so if anyone who uses the building at the evening or the weekend would be willing to support us, that would be fab. Without this extra money the school just wouldn't be able to provide the service it does, and if we don't get anymore helpers then we will have to cancel the event. Even if people can do a wee half hour stint, every little helps. The most anyone would be asked to do is two hours."

Headteacher of Carronhill School Lesley Hawksfield said: "It is impossible to get across how important that bus is to us. Our youngsters need to be out and about in the community, that is a major learning opportunity for them. Without the bus I don't know what we would do, so please if anyone can spare an hour it would help give the kids the opportunities that mean so much to them."

The event is due to take place on June 5 between 10am and 4pm at Stonehaven's Somerfield store. Friends of Carronhill have already held a Beetle Drive this year and have more events lined up for the rest of 2010, including a Race Night in September.

Anyone interested in helping out can get in touch by emailing carronhillfriends@aol.com or by phoning Gail Sangster on 07810 264814 before May 28.
