Great catch for The Bay
A Stonehaven fish and chip shop has battered off competition to walk away with a special award at the first ever Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) Awards.
The Bay Fish and Chips was awarded the SRA Special Judges Award for fully embracing the concept of sustainable fish, scoring 100% in the sustainable seafood section of the SRA Star Rating survey.
All restaurants that achieved a star rating in 2011 were considered for the awards, which included more than 400 outlets nationwide ranging from fine-dining establishments to local restaurants.
Last year The Bay achieved a three star rating from the SRA, placing it among the highest rated restaurants in the UK, alongside celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s two River Cottage establishments and Raymond Blanc’s multi-award winning Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire.
Owner of The Bay, Calum Richardson said: “We are thrilled to be awarded with this special award, it is a great accreditation for the business and a great feeling for the staff and for all their hard work. It is an achievement to be recognised alongside top restaurants and we hope to lead the way for other Fish and Chip shops. We worked hard to gain our three star rating as sustainability means a lot to the business as we strive to offer our customers the best quality of fish on the market.”
The Bay, which became the first fish and chip shop to gain Marine Stewardship Council Chain of Custody for North Sea haddock, worked hard to get across the importance of sustainable fish to their customers by printing 6,000 leaflets explaining the need for sourcing fish sustainably.
