KAYLEIGH HOT FOOTS TO DANCE SUCCESS
A PORTLETHEN youngster has hot footed her way into the top six of the Junior Modern Dance Scottish championships.
12 year old Kayleigh Alaszewski takes part in modern dance group Dance Dimension, and has already won five trophies for her performances since September.
The annual Scottish event takes place in Helensburgh, Glasgow, and Kayleigh won 6th place in the Junior Competition.
She was competing against 42 other girls, aged 14 and under, to bag a place in the final six – a round Kayleigh never even thought she would make it to.
"I was happy to have qualified for the championships," she said. "Last year I didn't get through so my aim was just to get through the first round, and thought I'd try for the next round next year. But I kept getting through the rounds and I just thought this is a dream!
"I'm so pleased I made it, as I was up against some of the top dancers in Scotland. It's one of the hardest competitions to do and I can't believe I managed to get 6th place. I'm so happy!"
Performing her routine so many times in one day was a tiring experience, but one she enjoyed. She added: "I was definitely exhausted when it was finished, I was aching all over. But it was worth it because everyone there is so nice and you get to meet new people and make new friends."
Kayleigh has been dancing since she was three years old and also takes part in tap dancing and ballet and started entering her first competitions when she was just nine.
However, Kayleigh says that modern dance is her favourite and along with the spectacular dance routines she had to learn, she loves to wear the eye catching costumes that help with the performances.
She said: "I love everything about modern dance. The dancing is the best part but the great costumes always help they make you feel special - you've got to stand out the best you can and catch the judge's attention because you get extra points for the costume. I usually get my costumes online, because they are quite hard to find."
Sharon Donaldson, who runs Dance Dimension said: "I'm very proud of her, she is a hard worker and she deserves it."
Kayleigh's mum, Debbie, added: "She works hard and really enjoys it, and that's the main thing. Ever since she was young she has loved to dance, I'm really proud of what she has achieved."
