Labour welcomes better rail service
More trains are on the way for Portlethen Station thanks to local campaigning. Network Rail have recommended that extra trains be put on between Stonehaven, Portlethen and Aberdeen during the morning rush hour.
Labour Party candidates have been lobbying Network Rail over many months and are very pleased to see that it is now listening to the requests of the local community.
Greg Williams, who campaigned on the issue as Labour’s candidate in the recent elections, said: “I am delighted to see that our work in this area has paid off. Our petition for new train services highlighted an issue of real concern and Network Rail has listened. Their Route Utilisation Strategy of June 2011 has proposed increased commuter services. We must now work to ensure that this proposal is put into practice.”
Labour Party Council hopeful Alison Evison is determined to keep up the pressure to ensure that better train services for Portlethen are delivered. She states: “I know that good transport links are incredibly important to those local residents who travel into Aberdeen daily to work and to study. The new houses proposed for North Kincardine will increase the demands on the transport network. We need to ensure that transport is given high priority in all planning decisions.
“People want councillors who can identify with their concerns and who can bring fresh energy to deliver effective results. They are fed up with inaction and are now looking for a change from the local Lib-Dem dominance.
“A Labour representative would make a real difference to the way issues are tackled. I am committed to ensuring that the North Kincardine Ward gets the quality service it deserves from its elected councillors.”

Having lived in Portlethen for some seventeen years, it never ceases to amaze me how Portlethen has been studiously ignored by the those who could make residents lives a damn sight better than they are. Take note council wallahs and transport chiefs. It is wide open to builders, they appear to have carte blanche to build and build and build, but no infrastructure follows. Local councillors to a man work their socks off and most times it appears to no avail.

Friday, July 15, 2011 at 12:02 AMYes, I agree that the service to Aberdeen and beyond needs to be improved for all commuters. Daytime services for shoppers and students tofrom the local stations are also seriously lacking. The new station at Laurencekirk could certainly be better served by local trains - the young people in the Youth Forum there are rightly campaigning for a better transport service to enable them to spend evenings in Aberdeen and then return home. The recommendations in the Route Utilisation Strategy of June 2011 have shown that Network Rail does respond to effective campaigning and Labour is supporting the young people there in their endeavours.

Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 03:57 PMNot before time and a long overdue 'improvement- but it's also time for the Aberdeen Crossrail scheme to be properly progressed - not just the additional provision of a few extra 'peak hour only' services! Furthermore - start them back from Montrose so as to serve Laurencekirk too!
