North East Scotland Credit Union (NESCU) have launched their latest collection point in Stonehaven, bringing the total to 12 around the North-east.

NESCU are now based within the council housing offices at 16-22 Allardyce Street every Thursday from 1-2pm.

They also have collection points in 15 schools around Aberdeen and Shire and are looking to further collection point access - including opening one in Portlethen in the near future.

A credit union collection point was opened in Inverbervie back in March 2011.

North East Scotland Credit Union is a financial co-operative owned and run by its members. NESCU provides a basic savings account and low-cost borrowing, encouraging its members to pan and budget for the future.

NESCU would like to hear from people who may be interested in volunteering or starting a credit union collection in their area.

Nescu have over 150 Volunteers who help run them. Collection points are a benefit for people in the communities who can’t or don’t have bank or building society accounts.

People can go along, make payments and arrange withdrawals as well as applying for loans.

One testimony from Inverbervie stated: “Without the credit union I would not have had carpets and a cooker in my first flat. I had been homeless and had nothing, but for a couple of quid a week I was able to move into my flat with the things that I needed.

‘‘Nescu also referred me to other places to help me with my benefits and to get furniture and dishes etc.”

Another from Aberdeenshire said: “Nescu helped me so much when I was in trouble with money. I was working and had got myself into a lot of debt with pay day lenders. Nescu gave me a loan and paid off the pay day loans plus the interest and charges.

“I then started to save with them while I paid off my loan. I now have no debt and some savings.

‘‘They are great. I don’t know what I would have done without them.”
