Positive steps have been taken for the future of the Laurencekirk Gala following their most recent meeting in December.

The Kincardineshire Observer first reported at the start of December how the future of the popular event was in doubt as more volunteers were needed.

Committee member Lloyd Davies who has helped with the gala for the last seven years contacted the Observer after the most recent meeting, telling us of the positive steps whichhad been taken.

He said: “A meeting was held in the Royal Hotel on Sunday, December 8, to discuss the future of Laurencekirk Gala.

‘‘A dozen people attended the meeting and there were a number of others who offered their apologies - this is a big increase in numbers compared to previous meetings.

“This most recent meeting was the most positive for a long time. There were many new faces and everyone left with a real sense that a committee could be formed and a Gala run in 2014.

“Various ideas about the format of the gala and attracting new volunteers were put forward and will be discussed at future meetings.

“There are already volunteers in place to run the tower race, a bingo night, a kids’ club and a licensed bar at the event and it was agreed by all in attendance that the more groups and individuals who come forward to run different parts of the gala, the more the workload can be spread and the easier it will be to run for any new committee.

“Everyone is open to new ideas and anyone who wishes to have an input is invited to attend the next meeting on Sunday, January 26, at 7pm in the Royal Hotel restaurant when it is hoped a new committee will officially be formed.”
