Stonehaven and District Community Council have announced the 2013 winner of the Stonehaven Community Award for its second year in running.

The award, similar to the Hannah Dyson Award for younger people in the town, calls on members of the public to nominate outstanding members of the community over the age of 18.

Run by the Stonehaven and District Community Council, Stonehaven Business Association and the local churches, the award - which was introduced last year - aims to highlight the valuable work carried out by adults in the community based on their excellence, merit or outstanding achievement.

This year, the winner has been chosen as Stonehaven man David Lawman.

Mr Lawman, has volunteered in the town for over 30 years while working full-time, bringing up three children and being a husband to his wife, Lisa.

The 50-year-old took on his first volunteering role as a teenager where he ran the 5-8 club at the community centre and has continued to offer his volunteering service since.

Mr Lawman, who works full-time for Subsea7 in Aberdeen, was the event manager for Open Air in the Square this year and is an active member of Stonehaven and District Lions Club. He was also chairman of “Stonehaven is Special” and has swung fireballs for the town in the past.

Mr Lawman was also involved in the Sea Cadets as well as being present at the majority of community events in the town raising community funds.

He said: “I thought it was a joke when I heard had won. I’m just doing what needs to be done but, of course, it is nice to be appreciated for my efforts although, it should also be remembered that everything I’m involved in requires a group of people, it’s not just an individual effort. All those people require praise as well as they work incredibly hard together.”

He will receive his award at the beginning of March.
