MARKING THE LIFE OF HOLOCAUST VICTIM

A SPECIAL exhibition to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the birth of Anne Frank has gone on display in Portlethen.

The library at Portlethen Academy will host the exhibition – a tribute to the legacy of the young diarist and Holocaust victim.

Anne Frank: A History for Today is a travelling display managed by Anne Frank Scotland, which is part of The Anne Frank Trust UK, a partner charity of The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.

It opened in Portlethen on Monday (June 8) and will run until July 8. The tour coincides with the exact date of the 80th anniversary of Anne's birth on Friday, June 12.

The exhibition will enable visitors to gain a greater understanding of the human consequences of persecution and war by placing complex historical events against the life of one young person.

Peer guides made up of 10 S5 students and 10 S4 Excel students, will be paired and trained to lead groups around the exhibition and on the 12th a class of P7 pupils from Portlethen Primary will be shown the display.

It covers a wide range of issues and themes including Anne Frank's diary, the history of the Frank family, their secret hiding place, the courage of resisters and helpers and the victims of the Holocaust.

Anne Frank's Jewish family were forced into hiding in the Netherlands when the German Army took occupation of the country. They spent 25 months concealed in a tiny attic room but were betrayed in 1944, arrested and deported.

Anne died of typhus in Belsen concentration camp in March 1945 but her diary, which was given to her on her 13th birthday and chronicles her life from 12 June 1942 until 1 August 1944, survived and has become one of the most important documents of the Holocaust.

Anne Frank Scotland draws on the power of her life and her diary to challenge prejudice and reduce hatred, encouraging people to embrace positive attitudes, responsibility and respect for others.

A programme of activities for local schools and the wider community will be available for the duration of the exhibition.
