Park and Ride project
is back on the cards
IT is hoped that the park and ride would ease congestion at the extremely busy Bridge of Dee roundabout entering the city.
THE concept of a new park and ride facility at Hillside in Portlethen is back on the agenda after council officers asked residents and community councillors for their views this week.
Representatives from Aberdeenshire Council made a presentation to the Portlethen and District Community Council on Tuesday evening, asking for input and opinions about the proposed scheme.
The facility, which would cost £10 million, would form part of a wider plan to create a ring of Park and Rides around Aberdeen and would only go ahead if the AWPR was built.
It would also have a small waiting area, for about 50 people, and possibly shower facilities for lorry drivers.
There would be space for 1000 cars, push bikes and possibly a small lorry park.
Issues raised at the meeting included residents’ worries that a park and ride facility would affect traffic coming in and out of Hillside, and also concerns were raised over how many people would be willing to swap their cars for a bus in what can often be a gridlocked queue of traffic.
CONSULTATION
Local Councillor Alison Evison,l who attended the meeting, said: “It was a very general consultation about a potential park and ride.
‘‘It was very much just ideas being put forward at this stage.
‘‘It is really in its first stage and people were just being asked for their input. There is absolutely nothing set in stone at the moment.
“I think that anything that can reduce the volume of traffic entering the city is a very good idea, but obviously these things need to be worked out properly.”
Cllr Evison added that some residents were worried that a park and ride may increase the risk of flooding.
Council officers took on board all of the comments that were put forward as part of their consultation.
Several Portlethen residents who were affected by flooding last month also attended the meeting.
The town suffered flooding in areas including Burnside Gardens and Alder Drive, where a “river” was running down the street.
They were told that a representative from Aberdeenshire Council has been invited to attend the March meeting of the community council in Portlethen Academy.
