PORTLETHEN PUBLIC ARTS PROJECT?

A NEW public arts project could be started in the Portlethen area.

It has come from the ideas of the Aberdeenshire Council's Arts Officer, Community Learning team and the Libraries team and hopes to encourage people to take in interest in public art and create a 'centre point' for the town.

Community Learning Worker Lynn Buchan said: "There is no heart to Portlethen, it is all intertwined. A Community Development group may be a way to bringing a centre to the town. It will also bring something new and exciting to the network of towns."

Aberdeenshire Council's Arts Development Officer Marie Shaw said: "The first meeting is for people to come and find out about what public art is. It will be a relaxed evening and will give people a chance to talk about art. It's an opportunity for anybody who is interested in Portlethen and the surrounding towns to come and see examples of public art and to think about Portlethen, Newtonhill and Muchalls as a developing feature. At the end of the evening we will invite anyone who is interested to form a group for the area and start exploring possibilities. There will be an opportunity to look at whole area surrounding Portlethen and see if we can work with the public to create public art.

"Nothing has come from a developer, it has come from within Aberdeenshire, and it's an important part of what enables an area to have a cultural identity.

"It is important to feel a sense of place within a community. Public art is about seeing what is important about an area,-what makes Portlethen Portlethen? How can the area be made more beautiful? Public art is such an emotive thing that shows how things are connected. The Angel of the North, in Newcastle, is a huge example of it."

Ms Buchan added it would be great for the people of the area as it is a "good way of bringing the community together."

The first meeting will take place on Tuesday March 9 at Portlethen Academy at 7pm. If anyone wishes to register their interest they can call Lynn Buchan on 01224 786198
