PRIMARY LEAVERS OFF ON A 'NEW BEGINNING'
Primary School In addressing the leavers at the Primary School's end-of –term service in Johnshaven Church last Wednesday, the minister, the Rev Colin Dempster, said that Jesus would always be with them as they set off on a new beginning.
Reports on team activities during the year were given and trophy presentations made by Graeme Anderson on behalf of the football team, Alan Beedie on behalf of the girls' football team and Fiona Anderson and Sandra Dunbar, who also presented cycling proficiency tests, on behalf of the badminton players.
Kevin Dunbar presented certificates to all members of the Car Club and Shell baseball caps to the boys who took the "Johnner Mail" to Alford for the successful entry in the Shell Greenpower competition.
Thirty years in the teaching profession, Mrs Irenee Lawson was retiring after six years as Head Teacher and she spoke with feeling on how much Johnshaven Primary School had meant to her during her time in charge and expressed her appreciation to all the many people who had supported her during that period.
In turn Mrs Lawson was thanked for all she had done for the school by Mrs Karelia Wright of the Friends of Johnshaven Primary School on behalf of the pupils and parents and, to a resounding cheer, was presented with a mounted replica of the school's Homecoming Year collage, signed with a message from all the pupils, a large bouquet of flowers and a Starfish Studio voucher.
Mearns Coastal Parish
Reflecting in the Holiday Club issue of Mearns Coastal's newsletter on how many people are in Church on a Sunday morning, the minister, the Rev Colin Dempster, used the Parable of the Lost Sheep to comment on the "joyous reuniting that can take place when missing members return to worship."
Encouraging them to do so at Johnshaven and St Cyrus he writes that they will discover that minister and congregation, sharing the Gospel and praying together, "try to offer a mixed form of worship from older traditional hymns to more modern worship songs."
The minister's words were paralleled in his sermon in Johnshaven Church on Sunday morning when, returning to the example of Jonah who fled both physically and spiritually from a critical decision, he reminded the congregation that Jesus is the "good shepherd", the saviour of lost souls.
The praise also reflected the message in the newsletter, the organist, Mrs Helen Doig swapping organ for piano and being joined by the Rev Dempster on guitar to lead the congregation in a hymn from Junior Mission Praise.
This Sunday's services will be held at the usual times of 10 a.m. in St Cyrus Church and 11.30 a.m. in Johnshaven Church. The next Vestry Hours will be in St Cyrus Church on Monday, July 5 between 6 and 7 p.m. and at the same time in Johnshaven Church on Monday July 12 when there will be the opportunity to discuss " any matter" in confidence with the Rev Dempster.
Meanwhile the Prayer and Bible Study Group continues to meet at 38 Invergarry Park, St Cyrus every Monday evening at 7 p.m. and all are welcome to attend while, looking further ahead, a short course exploring Christianity will be held over six Monday evenings in the manse at St Cyrus starting in the autumn at 7.15 p.m. This is an informal "Enquirer's Group", open to anyone and tailored to meet the needs of those who come along and while some may wish to go on to Church membership there is no obligation to do so. Anyone interested in this should get in touch with the minister on 01674 850880.
"Rocky's Plaice"
Mearns Coastal's twelfth summer mission begins in the Village Hall on Monday, July 5 and runs until Friday 9. Set in "Rocky's Plaice" it is based largely on the book of Acts and provides a fast-moving, fun and action –packed holiday programme which includes storytelling episodes, the opportunity to discover God's love for everyone shown in Jesus, his son, and allows the children to hear what it means to follow Jesus today.
The ever-popular 5-a-side football tournament will, as always, take place at Wairds Park on the Wednesday evening and all are welcome to the "Church Caf" in Johnshaven Village Hall on the evening of Friday July 9 at 7 p.m. when there will be a presentation of the activities undertaken by the children during the week.
Bowling Club
The maximum five points continue to elude the Bowling Club in their Kincardineshire League campaign but on Thursday night they came one point nearer in their match against St Cyrus B.C.
St Cyrus have been competing well this season and if their close neighbours were to get anything at all from the fixture they were going to be at their very best and the away rink most certainly were.
Losing a maximum at the first followed by another single, Meggie Hann, Roy Mowatt, Alan Black and Bryan Duff surged spectacularly ahead against J. Murray, J. Davidson, J. McNicoll and S. Davidson winning the next eight ends to establish a commanding 13 shot lead, 18-5. Singles were then exchanged before a 2,3 combination opened a door for St Cyrus which was immediately slammed shut by a count of four, 23-10. The home rink did score singles at each of the last two ends but this did nothing to detract from what was a splendid all-round performance by the Johnshaven rink who left the green ready to enjoy the fine St Cyrus hospitality, very worthy winners by 23 shots to 12.
In a very close encounter at the Wairds it was the visitors who held sway for most of the match but one big end was almost enough to give the home rink a win.
From the start Fiona Dundas, Bill Inglis, Bett Beedie and Alan Robbie were in the slipstream of I. Smith, S. Murray, J. Ritchie and R. Smith trailing 8-12 after thirteen ends but a count of five at the fourteenth put their noses in front. St Cyrus notched a single at the fifteenth, Johnshaven likewise at the sixteenth, 14-13, and at the last were lying game shot, only for Robert Smith to burn the end. Had Alan Robbie's final bowl, in a very tight replayed seventeenth end, toppled the right way the match would have been Johnshaven's but it fell back giving St Cyrus the shot and an honourable share of the points, 14-14.
This was the first time this season that the Club has finished the evening unbeaten, and full credit must go to the away rink for such a sterling performance.
Friday's hat night winners were Clark Simpson and Alan Robbie by 9 shots. Points and hat nights continue on Tuesdays and Fridays respectively at 7 p.m. and all are welcome.
This Sunday, July 4 the Club meet Bervie B.C. away from home in the first leg of the annual match for the TSB Trophy and, having lost their grip on the trophy last year, the hosts will no doubt be determined to make the most of their home advantage.
