"GREEN" EXHIBITION COMES TO TOWN

THE cold, dark nights may be drawing in, but Stonehaven residents are being asked to take some time to think "green" before they switch on their central heating this year.

Since January 2008, a not-for-profit company have been researching opportunities to generate energy from renewable sources in the town, in order to reduce Stonehaven's carbon footprint and create income for the benefit of the local community.

The Sustainable Energy Association Stonehaven (SEAS), which was granted 12,400 from the Scottish Government Climate Challenge Fund in April, is now ready to unveil its findings at a special exhibition at Plainstones this Saturday, October 10.

Throughout the day members of the association will be on hand to talk locals through the various ideas under consideration, from river hydro and tidal energy to solar power and small scale wind turbines.

On display will be some of the technology that could be used in the area such as the Archimedes' Screw, a device that members believe could be put to use on the River Cowie to generate clean electricity for the area.

Residents will also be asked for their opinions on various proposals for the future of green energy in Stonehaven at Saturday's event.

Brian Menzies, director of SEAS, said: "As a community company it is essential that we develop ideas and opportunities that have the support of the community we work within. We have spent the last few months gathering information and working out possible options in order that we can illustrate the benefits of renewable energy for Stonehaven.

"We have already discussed options with a selection of groups in the town who may be more directly affected by some of the options and are grateful for their input. We hope that by engaging with residents in a number of ways we can reach a significant number of residents who could benefit from further development of our ideas.

"So far we have gained support from those already switched on to renewable energy but attracting the same degree of interest among the wider community is more of a challenge. We're up for it though and hope that we can generate an enthusiastic response.

"Our exhibition at Plainstones at the Market Square on Saturday will let people see working models of renewable energy generation as we hope it will be fun as well as informative."

As part of a three week consultation process SEAS will also be engaging with the pupils and staff of Mackie Academy, and presenting their ideas to the public meeting of Stonehaven Community Council on Tuesday, October 13 at 7.30pm in the Invercarron Resource Centre.
