RACE IS A FAMILY AFFAIR

TWO teachers from Stonehaven are running a half marathon together, and hope to spur each other on with some sibling rivalry.

Brother and sister Allan Skea and Jane Tulloch teach at Dunnottar Primary and Kinneff Primary respectively. They are running in the Inverness Half Marathon with Jane's brother in law, Albert Bruce, on Sunday March 14.

All three are taking part in aid of CLAN Cancer Support, a North-east based charity which specialises in helping families of those affected by cancer. Albert's sister was diagnosed with leukaemia last year and the family were so impressed by the work that CLAN do, they wanted to give something back. They have already raised over 500 for the charity.

This is the first marathon Allan and Jane have taken part in and they have found training to be a lot of fun.

Allan said: "This is our first half marathon, and we've been training hard. I go to the Fleet Feet training sessions and am trying to do cross training at weekends. I'm doing pretty well and I'm amazed at how fit I've managed to become! Jane and I sometimes train together, and there is definitely some rivalry. But we keep each other going and it's good banter.

"It's good to have something to aim for, and I would like to think I will keep on running. We're really enjoying it."

Allan and Jane have become so dedicated to training for the half marathon that not even the recent spell of bad weather has put them off. Allan said: "We just decided to do it in January so we've only had about eight weeks of training. We wanted to give us something to aim for in the horrible winter months. Sometimes it's difficult to get motived but we just think 'we've got to do it.'

"We've heard horror stories that the weather can be bad up at Inverness - so we might have to take our snow boots!"

As the trio are all related, and would be asking the same people for donations, they decided run together and enter as a group.

"It's great to have the motivation of other people training with you," Allan added. "We're really looking forward to it and it would be great if people could help us in supporting this worthy charity."
