SERVICE GIVES FOOD FOR THOUGHT!
Mearns Coastal Parish ON Sunday morning with Johnshaven Church dressed appropriately with the products of land and sea, locum minister, Mr Gordon Anderson, conducted a thought-provoking service of Harvest Thanksgiving on the theme of "giving and receiving."
Referring in his sermon to the parable of the weeds , Mr Anderson said that, while the weeds represented evil and the crops goodness, Christians should work towards the fulfilment of God's word in the world..
The organist was Robin Beattie.
This Sunday there will be only one service in the parish and that will be in St Cyrus Church at 11.30 a.m. when Interim Moderator, the Rev Catherine Hepburn, will officiate at the Celebration of Holy Communion.
Remembrance Day services will be held on Sunday, November 8 in Johnshaven Church at 10 a.m. and in St Cyrus Church at 11.30 a.m.

On Saturday, October 31 the Guild will be holding a Chrysanthemum Tea/coffee morning in the Church Hall between 10 and 11.30 a.m. Admission is free but there will be a charge of 1.50 for refreshments. There will also be a sales table and a special "treasure or trash" tombola stall in aid of Cancer Research.
Bowling Club
The Bowling Club's rink of Ann Aitken, Meggie Hann, Alan Black and Alan Robbie again returned home pointless from their Kincardineshire Indoor League match, beaten this time, 24-6 by Newtonhill B.C.
However, all their recent woes will be put behind them on Saturday night when, along with their colleagues, they will enjoy to the full the club's annual presentation of trophies and social evening in the Community Clubroom at Wairds Park.
Beach Clean-Up
Remember the beach clean-up this Sunday, October 25. Register at the Hardgate at 11 a.m. and work towards the Lathallan Burn. All necessary equipment provided. Complimentary refreshments in the Lifeboat House at the conclusion.
Perhaps those intending to take part might also like to be reminded that the clock goes back an hour on Sunday morning. Forgetting this detail might well result in an extra 60 minutes combing the beach rather than continuing to lie comfy in bed!
JFFMG
Organisations and individuals intending to apply to the Johnshaven Fish Festival Management Group should remember that the closing date for applications is Friday, October 30. Applications should be made in writing to JFFMG c/o Johnshaven Stores and include a brief description of the relevant activity. Awards will be made in November.
Christmas Fayre
It is now just a month until the Christmas Fayre on Saturday, November 21 and the organisers, the Wairds Park Bowling Carpet Fund committee, are happy to announce that all tables have been taken up. No doubt all the participating organisations will be gearing up for the event while potential customers should be putting aside the odd penny or perhaps pound or two in anticipation of bargains ahead.

Memories
Twenty five years ago this week-end many Guiding memories were revived during a nostalgic evening in the Village Hall when about 90 past and present members of the 1st Johnshaven unit (formerly 1st Kincardineshire) and Guide Association gathered from all over the country to celebrate the unit's 70th anniversary.
The company was welcomed and the top table introduced by Association President, Mrs Lorna Heap, and after a prayer by the Rev Thomas Wilson, the Royal toast was proposed by County Commissioner, Mrs E. McIntyre. There then followed a short history of Guiding in the village presented by the then Guide Guider, Mrs Susan Newton. Lady Colville, County Association President, proposed the toast to the Johnshaven unit which was replied to by the "camp jester", Mrs Sheila Simpson, a former Guider and recently appointed District Commissioner who, among other tales from the tents, described the improvements which had taken place in camping from stuffed paliasses to air-beds and from strips of old newspapers to toilet rolls and who went on to astonish the guests with intriguing details of what some of the young ladies got up to in the latrines!
Formal proceedings ended with the cutting of the cake by Mrs E. McBay, former Association President and the oldest Guide present. The Guides and Brownies then sang several well-known camp songs before every one sat down to enjoy an excellent buffet provided by the Guide Association and to enable those present to reminisce on the memorable moments of their Guiding past.
The Guiding movement in general has experienced its ups and downs and for a number of years there was no unit in Johnshaven. The Brownies, however, did continue and maybe due to this year's 100th anniversary of Guiding in Great Britain the Johnshaven unit has been revived and there are now five girls meeting, along with 13 Brownies, under Guider Mrs Carol Eaton.
Twenty years ago the Guides and Brownies participated in the Harvest Thanksgiving service in Johnshaven Church which was conducted by the minister, the Rev Tom Wilson. Essentially a family service, all the children brought their gifts to the harvest table and later in the afternoon those gifts were distributed among the sick and elderly of the parish and those in hospital.
