A Mearns postie, whose usual scenic round takes her from Fordoun to Arbuthnott, took an altogether different route recently.

Shona Brown, alongside her partner Shaun Kelly, completed the 96-mile West Highland Way at the beginning of this month, and the couple raised over £4000 for Macmillan Cancer Care in the process.

Shona and Shaun had been planning the trip for over a year when they decided to use it as a way to make some cash for charity.

Shaun said that the trip was full of highs and lows, explaining: “The weather was quite kind to us except on our 21-mile day across Rannoch Moor where it poured with rain all day with no shelter, and we arrived at our destination only to find there was a problem with the boiler hence no hot water!

‘‘The highs were many, the colours amazing with everything changing for autumn.

‘‘The views were spectacular, and often breathtaking - literally!

‘‘We found it a very rewarding experience with lots of memories - more good than bad - that will be with us forever.

“The biggest high was when we realised that we had raised just over £4000, a phenomenal amount.

‘‘We would like to thank the Post Office Laurencekirk, Mace Shop, Grassic Gibbon Centre and Fiddes Filling Station who all had sponsor sheets to help us raise money.

“Shona would like to thank her customers in Fordoun and Arbuthnott where a great deal of the sponsorship was raised, as well as family and friends for their support and generosity.

‘‘We look forward to handing over the substantial cheque over once the remainder of the money has been collected.”
