A unique World War One project looking at the Great War through the perspective of the surname Wishart has led to Luthermuir.
This past week the Kincardineshire Observer was contacted by Scott Wishart who is in the middle of his project looking through the surname Wishart.
During the last four years he has been researching and writing biographies of all men and women bearing the Wishart surname who served overseas between 1914-1919, in attempt to create a unique record of a surname at war.
To date Scott has identified almost 460 individuals and has compiled details of over half of them.
Statistically around 25% of Wisharts from all corners of the British Commonwealth and the USA never returned.
Scott is keen to be put in touch with anyone who maybe descendents of Wisharts and is looking for information of a Luthermuir trio John, Joseph and Albert Wishart.
Scott told us: “I am of course interested in anyone named Wishart who served in uniform, whether they were killed or survived the war, and being a Scottish surname, thought it a good idea to contact you to ask whether you might be able to put a ‘call out’ for anyone descended from a WW1 Wishart to get in touch.
“A great many of the biographies I’ve written so far have been with the help of family members who have found mention of their antecedents on the site, and have consequently emailed all manner of ephemera to help with the project.
“I am especially interested to hear from anyone related to a family from Luthermuir who lost three sons named John Watson Wishart, Joseph Watson Wishart and Albert Wishart within a year.”
The photojournalist by trade told us how his work on the Wishart project had been greatly aided by Jack Wishart, who has been conducting a one-name study of the surname for over forty years. The project is also part of the Great War Centenary Partnership Network and has recently been archived by the British Library Web Archive as part of their WW1 Centenary collection.
