Maggie Law Museum sign

On Thursday an important ceremony took place at the Maggie Law Maritime Museum in Gourdon, when a new sign marking the refurbishment of the Museum, was unveiled. The museum was created in 1990 to preserve the heritage of the Maggie Law lifeboat, which was in service for forty years, and saved thirty six lives.

The ceremony was performed by Committee Officer, Karen McWilliam of Aberdeenshire Council and Christopher Lilley, a senior pupil at Lathallan School, Johnshaven who has been part of a Lathallan group of pupils who have adopted the Maggie Law Maritime Museum as the heritage focal point of their Civilianship programme.

The Museum is currently being refurbished with financial help, and technical advice and support from Aberdeenshire Council and Dave Ramsay, Project Director of A Howe o’ the Mearns Heritage Association, is leading the Project with assistance from a group of specialist volunteers, the Maggie Law Committee, Community Council and the senior pupils from Lathallan School.

Since the Partnership between Lathallan School, and A Howe o’ the Mearns Heritage Association was formed and formally launched in November 2011, a number of highly successful outcomes have been achieved for the benefit of the Museum and the wider community of Gourdon.

The pupils who were involved with the Howe o’ the Mearns Heritage Association Project, have delivered some very successful and lasting, community contributions from their fundraising efforts, which included a coffee morning and Heritage Fair, and a sponsored walk including a wider range of staff and pupils which raised in total over £500.

The funds from these events have paid for a Council planning application for the sign, the production and erection of the sign, and a new floor for the educational area of the museum. In addition, the funds are being used to publish a range of educational activities for school pupils who will visit the Museum to learn more about the rich maritime heritage of Gourdon and the surrounding area.

Project Director Dave Ramsay said, “This is an exceptional piece of integrated community engagement by Aberdeenshire Council, the Regeneration Committee, the Community Council, the Maggie Law Committee, Lathallan School and the business community, and has produced a wide range of support and sponsorship for the refurbishment of the Museum.”
