The company which produces Mars bars has contacted a Stonehaven fish and chip shop over their advertising of the deep-fried mars bar.
In a letter to the Carron fish Bar, Mars said the deep-fried sweet does not “promote a healthy active lifestyle”.
Mars asks the shop’s owner, Lorraine Watson, to add a disclaimer to the menu stating that the product is not endorsed by the company.
In the letter Mars says it is “flattered” that the product is part of the Carron’s “flagship” product.
The company said: “However, we are concerned that the use and reference to our Mars brand and products may mislead the public into thinking that your products are in some way associated with, or endorsed by Mars, when this is not in fact the case.
“We are also concerned that your products are not in line with our marketing code, through which we promote a healthy and active lifestyle to consumers and treats in moderation.”
The Carron fish bar invented the deep fried mars bar twenty years ago and had recently considered seeking protected status for the dish. However the owners decided against this after they saw how much paperwork was involved.
