Last weekend saw another very successful Mearns Connections Festival at the Grassic Gibbon Centre in Arbuthnott with the theme being Castles of the Mearns.
The three main events were the Mearns Connections Dinner on Friday evening, the Ballad Bus tour on Saturday and Eileen McCallum In Conversation with Jim Brown on Saturday evening.
Professor Jane Geddes was the principal speaker on Friday evening giving a very entertaining and informative account of the significance of decorative panels at Fetteresso Castle in her talk. The Mearns Connections Ballad Bus wove its way through the Mearns on Saturday visiting castles and fortified houses. Entertainment was provided by Geordie and Joyce Murison, Dennis and Lorna Collie, Annie Reid and piper Andrew Young. Saturday evening a saw the return to The Mearns of wonderful actress Eileen McCallum in conversation with chairman Jim Brown, Eileen gave a delightful account of her life as an actress and, in particular, her magnificent portrayal of the indomitable Meg Menzies in the 1976 BBC production of Smeddum. The evening concluded with a successful fundraising auction and raffle in aid of the charity.
The Festival committee would like to thank everyone who turned out to support the Mearns Connections Festival which exists to perpetuate the memory of one of Scotland’s greatest writers.”
