A MEARNS couple who built up a multi-million pound roofing business have stepped back from the helm after 22 years.

George Rae Fotheringham and wife Pearl, who hail from Laurencekirk, set up Discovery Roofing Ltd in 1989. The business was initially based in Dundee and the couple were shortly joined by Ian Forbes as co-director.

The company soon built up a reputation in the industrial roofing and cladding industry for first class workmanship and secured major contracts nationwide, growing into a multi-million pound business.

Major contracts have included the NCR building at Dundee, Robert Gordon Sports Centre in Aberdeen, the Oncology Unit at Foresterhill and more recently the casino in Dundee, as well as various sports centres, hospitals, colleges and schools.

In 1992 the company moved to premises at the harbour in Montrose from which it still operates and will continue to do so under new management with Rae and Ian acting in a consultancy capacity.

Rae and Pearl intend to enjoy their house in Speyside where they have fishing and also to golf and go walking with their two labradors, while holidays are planned to visit their twin sons - Alan, who lives in Australia and Mark, in Bahrain.

Ian and his wife Isabel, who stay in Arbroath plan to spend more time with their grandchildren, having just returned from a family holiday.

Before setting up Discovery Roofing, Rae and Pearl owned the Crown Hotel Laurencekirk from 1983-1987. By doing so Rae was following a long family tradition in the licensed trade.

His grandparents George and Christine Rae owned the Crown Hotel in Stonehaven for many years. His mother Aileen followed her parents into the trade by owning and running the Crown in Laurencekirk for 23 years until 1979. After a four year break, Rae and Pearl purchased the hotel, bringing it back into the family.

Rae’s father Alexander (Nabby) Fotheringham was an auctioneer with Kincardineshire Auction Marts for many years, as was his father William before him.

Pearl is well-known in Montrose from when she worked as a photographer at the Van Werninck Studio.
