A host of folk from across the Mearns area will be vying for the top titles at this year’s Pride of Aberdeen Awards.

The awards will take place at Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre on Saturday, November 12.

Finalists in a host of categories include Colin Moir of Stonehaven Coastguard Rescue Team, Garrith Glennie of Complete Fire and Safety Solutions and Aberdeen and Portlethen Rescue Teams.

In the Blue Lights Hero Award, Colin Moir is up against White Watch Centreal Fire Station in Aberdeen and David Gauld, the longest serving First Responder for the Scottish Ambulance Service in Aberdeenshire.

Colin has been a volunteer with the Stonehaven Coastguard rescue team for the past 33 years and has been station officer for 20 years.

During his time with the service he has been involved in countless rescues and saved numerous lives on the coastline between Johnshaven and Aberdeen.

Going on the average number of call-outs per year, it is estimated that he has attended in excess of 500.

Garrith Glennie will compete for the Health and Safety Award title.

Garrith has built up his business over the past few years despite ill health.

Most of his business has been built on word of mouth due to his kind nature and passion for customer service.

Customers have remained loyal to him and help where they can.

Through his business journey he has made not only new clients, but a lot of new friends and anything that has been asked for has never been too big a request.

He has built up his SCR as well and worked with some of the larger companies and events around the city and Shire.

Meanwhile, Aberdeen and Portlethen Rescue Teams have been nominated for this year’s Search and Rescue Award.

Coastguards are formed into Coastguard Rescue Teams which are situated at strategic locations around the coast and are equipped to deal with incidents and rescues appropriate to the risks associated with local coastal terrain and shoreline activities.

In nominating them, it was stated: “This amazing group deserves recognitiion for their commitment and hard work”.

They will compete against Peterhead RNLI and the Ballater Firefighters.
