A MEARNS Academy pupil is taking on a 51 mile cycle ride to raise money for an Alzheimer charity.

Fifteen-year-old Brandon Imray, who is a fifth-year pupil, will take on the Pedal for Scotland challenge on Sunday September 11, which will see him cycling from Glasgow Green to Murrayfield to raise money for the charity Alzheimer Scotland.

The 51 mile Glasgow to Edinburgh ride, in which Brandon will be participating, is Scotland’s biggest bike ride and attracted 8,000 participants last year.

Brandon decided to do the ride after two of his friends completed it last year.

Brandon explained why he decided to raise money for an Alzheimer charity. He said: “My grandma was diagnosed with alzheimers when she was only 52, two years ago.” As a result of this, Brandon decided he wanted to raise some money for a charity related to the disease.

He originally set a target of £350 but after reaching this target in two days he realised that he would be able to raise more than that. He then raised his target to £500 but once again fund-raising quickly exceeded this amount and he decided to set his target at £600.

Brandon has now raised over £800 for the charity and is hoping the amount will continue to grow.

Brandon is hoping to complete the 51 mile cycle in between 3 1/2 and 4 hours and he has been hard at work training for the challenge.

He said: “I have been doing training sessions, around 20 miles after school and 40 miles at the weekends.” Brandon has been doing his training in the hills around his home in St Cyrus.

He says he is “looking forward” to the challenge and is hoping it will be an “adventure”.

Brandon’s mum Eve, explained how she felt when her son told her what he wanted to do. She said: “When he first told me what he wanted to do I was really chuffed. I was happy that he wanted to do it anyway but when he decided to do it for this charity I was delighted.”

Brandon’s chosen charity, Alzheimer Scotland offers care, information and support to people with dementia and carers in Scotland. The charity has Dementia Advisors, Dementia Nurses and carries out medical research.
