This year marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I.

People in the Mearns and surrounding areas are being invited to help mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One.

August 4, 1914, was the date of the Declaration of War by the United Kingdom that heralded the beginning of the ‘Great War.’

Aberluthnott and Laurencekirk Church of Scotland is marking this occasion in two ways. On Sunday, August 3, the services at Marykirk Church, 9.30am, and Laurencekirk, 11am, will be a time remembrance and reflection with the Roll of Honour for the Parishes being read out, for possibly the first time.

On Monday, August 4, at 6pm there will be a wreath laid at the War Memorial in Laurencekirk and 7pm at the Crosspoles War Memorial.

All these occasions are public services and all will get a warm welcome.
