New benches ‘out of place’?

A COUPLE of colourful benches have popped up in Stonehaven and Newtonhill recently, prompting some residents to question where they came from and how their locations have been chosen.

The Leader can answer one of these queries without much difficulty – Aberdeenshire Council have installed the benches (which are made from recycled plastic) as part of a pilot scheme.

The choice of location however, is more difficult to answer and several people have contacted the paper to say that some of the benches look out of place.

Benches in the park at Newtonhill or in Hunter Park on Slug Road in Stonehaven look fine, however one of the benches that has confused people is on the corner of Mearns Drive in Stonehaven, where it looks on to a brick wall.

Allan Cairnduff, a volunteer with the Horizon project, said: “Personally, I feel that anything that brightens up the town and adds a bit of colour is a good thing. But some people have said that they are not too happy with them, the one on Mearns Drive doesn’t look on to anything and maybe would have been better going in the park round the corner. They might have fitted in a bit better down by the outdoor pool.”

The council have said that there are no plans to continue the scheme or install any more of the distinctive seats.
