New coach link through Mearns

A luxury coach link, which will serve the Mearns Coastal towns, was launched this week.

Bus operator Stagecoach unveiled an investment of £1.4million in a fleet of new luxury coaches in a major boost for public transport in Aberdeenshire.

The six coaches will operate on the new X7 route between Aberdeen and Dundee, serving Stonehaven, Montrose and Arbroath providing a limited stop, direct coach link commencing on September 12.

Each vehicle is fitted with a toilet, a special wheelchair lift for easy boarding, free wi-fi, luxury leather seats and CCTV for passenger safety and security.

The coastrider X7 route will operate hourly Mondays to Saturdays and every two hours on Sundays, offering a fast and frequent route along the coast.

Andrew Jarvis, Managing Director of Stagecoach Bluebird, said: “We are delighted to be making such a huge investment in public transport in the Mearns area.”

“The improvements we are making to our zonal ticket system will make it even simpler and more cost effective to use the bus, with significant discounts to be seen by many who already rely on the bus.”

“The new vehicles are fitted with the latest ‘green’ engines so offer a greener, smarter travel option, added luxury with leather seats, free wi-fi, free mobile charging power points, climate control and panoramic views.”

Stonehaven and Lower Deeside Councillor, Peter Bellarby, has welcomed the new express bus service.

He said “This is a good step in improving public transport in the area and I hope the new service will be well used.”

“Although the new service will only stop on the main road at the junctions for Johnshaven and Gourdon rather than go down into the village, I am pleased that Aberdeenshire Council has been able to arrange for the school bus going to Stonehaven in the morning and back in the afternoon to pick up ordinary passengers in the villages. This will supplement service 113 which will continue to serve the villages.”

“The new service to Dundee should allow connections to further afield at Dundee, which will improve the situation for long distance travellers.”

“In recent years the Aberdeen to Glasgow bus has not stopped at Stonehaven so that passengers from Stonehaven have either had to go to Aberdeen first or alternatively change at Montrose as well as Dundee, all on rather slow services.”
