Olympic Torch to visit Stonehaven

Stonehaven is set to take part in a Historic event when the Olympic torch travels through the town in June next year.

Following it’s visit to Aberdeen on June 12, the Olympic flame will pass through Stonehaven.

The route through the town the torch will take has not been announced.

Stonehaven Councillors have welcomed the news. Councillor Wendy Agnew said: “I am delighted that Stonehaven has been chosen as one of the towns that the Olympic Torch will visit. I am sure that the people of Stonehaven will turn out to line the route in Stonehaven and wish it well on its way to the Games. Hopefully the Union Flag will be flown from the Town Hall Flagstaff on the 12th June to confirm our support for the games.”

Councillor Graeme Clark said: “I welcome the event coming through Stonehaven and I encourage local people especially children to get involved. It will be the nearest we get to the Olympic experience and I know that Canadians enjoyed the carrying of the torch when it made it’s way across Canada when the games were held in Vancouver.

“I have problems with the lottery money that is being given to London for the games at the expense of projects elsewhere as I know that some local groups are struggling for funding at present, but this is a unique opportunity for Stonehaven and I’m sure locals will enjoy their involvement in the Olympic relay.”

The Olympic torch holds great significance for the Olympic games. A very precise ritual for the lighting of the Flame is followed at every Games. It is lit from the sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a traditional ceremony among the ruins of the home of the Ancient Games. The flame will then be delivered to Great Britain where it is set to take part in a 70 day tour where it will be carried by 8,000 torchbearers. On July 27 the torch will arrive at the Olympic Stadium in London where it will officially open London’s 2012 Olympic Games. Stonehaven is just one of over 1,000 villages, towns and cities which will host the Olympic flame and it’s bearers. And during the journey over 95% of the population will come within an hour’s journey of the legendary flame. A Street by street route is set to be confirmed next year so that everyone can get the chance to see this piece of history pass by.
