Grampian Police confirmed to the Leader on Tuesday that they have had no reports over the last month of dogs being stolen in South Aberdeenshire, despite an Internet rumour.

Over the past few weeks there have been a number of dogs going missing and not found in the area south of Stonehaven and an online warning has been circulating warning people of “dog snatchers” in the area.

There has been rumours circulating that dogs were stolen from areas such as Marykirk, Inverbervie and Drumlithie but there have been no official reports made to Grampian Police.

The Facebook and Twitter warning states that men in a white van have been going to the front door of people’s houses to distract the occupant whilst another goes to the back door of the house and steals their dog.

It’s stated that they then either use the dog for dog fights or breeding. It’s been said that rare breed, or expensive, female dogs are often stolen, impregnated, and the puppies are sold and the dog is abandoned.

Grampian Police said they have received inquiries about this happening in other areas and it is likely to be an online rumour with the place name changing.
