An acclaimed Stoney photographer is heading a new photography competition in Aberdeenshire called ‘Belonging to Aberdeenshire.’
The competition will capture iconic images of what the area means to local people and Ambassadors.
Andy Hall received international recognition for his successful book “A Sense of Belonging to Scotland”, which was described by Ewan McGregor as “The most beautiful collection of photographs of Scotland that I have ever seen”.
The Stonehaven-based photographer who recently held a book signing for his new book, has now been commissioned by Aberdeenshire Council’s Be Part of the Picture creative placemaking programme, as part of an exploration of what makes Aberdeenshire unique to its people.
Photographers of all skill levels, including novices, are being invited to submit an image of a local feature or place that they have a special connection with, along with a brief description that reflects how it contributes to their sense of belonging to the area.
The council’s Community Learning and Development (CLD) teams are working with community groups across Aberdeenshire to get as many people involved as possible.
Submissions are being split into six categories:
Growing up in Aberdeenshire – An indigenous local’s perspective
Putting down roots in Aberdeenshire – An incomer’s perspective
Making a living in Aberdeenshire – A worker/business perspective
Relaxing in Aberdeenshire – A holidaymaker’s/visitor’s perspective
Realising a dream in Aberdeenshire – An entrepreneur’s perspective
Longing for Aberdeenshire – An ex-pat’s perspective
Andy will be joined by international photographer Colin Prior to shortlist submissions from each of the categories, including a winning image. The chosen images will be displayed across Aberdeenshire in 2014. The locations in the winning submissions will also be professionally photographed by Andy and included in a limited-edition photographic book that will be published next summer.
