It may only be February, but volunteers at Stonehaven’s Open Air Pool have already begun preparations for opening in May.
The 2014 season, which begins on May 31, marks a landmark year as it will be 80 years since the pool opened to the public for the first time.
With only 16 weeks until that special birthday opening, the Friends of the Pool are appealing for more volunteers to help, particularly with cleaning and painting. Work sessions start on Monday, February 10, and will continue on Monday and Wednesday afternoons throughout those 16 weeks, with Saturday morning working added during March.
“Everything is weather-dependent,’” said David Dobbie, Trustee of the Friends, “so we expect it to be all hands on deck as soon as we get some reasonable weather.
‘‘We’d be delighted to see new faces as well as old friends.
“Anyone who would like to help can come along on Monday between 1 and 4pm or contact us through our website www.stonehavenopenairpool.co.uk or the Stonehaven Heated Open Air Pool Facebook page.
‘‘You don’t need any special skills or equipment and are assured of a friendly welcome – just bring along your overalls and a smile!”
The Mearns Leader has been featuring the Open Air Pool in its pages since 1934, and we have found countless photographs in our archives, but we want to hear from you.
