Have your say

Stonehaven Baby Fair is delighted to announce that the Police Scotland Road Safety team will be on hand at the event offering advice on how to keep your family safer while travelling in the car.

The officers will be on hand to explain the importance of a correctly-fitted child restraint and show you how to find the best seat for your child. You can also have your car seats checked by a trained officer in the Market Square car park.

Event organiser Nicole Hepburn said: “We are delighted that Police Scotland are attending our event buying and fitting car seats can be a daunting experience for many parents and to have experts on hand to give advice and check your seats will be invaluable.”

Last year in Moray and Aberdeenshire, during three clinics, it was found that over 80% of child car seats were incorrectly fitted. Road Safety Advisor June Andrew said, “this is a valuable opportunity for local people to have their seats checked for free as this check could save a child’s life. Incompatible seats, loose belts or harnesses, incorrect routings are common faults which will affect your child’s safety. Children under 12 years of age or less than 135 cm must use the appropriate seat for their weight and height”

The Scottish Good Egg Guides, www.protectchild.co.uk, states that “an unrestrained child can be killed in an impact at speeds as low as 5 mph and if properly restrained a child is three times less likely to sustain a head injury in a crash than an unrestrained child. In a collision at 30 mph, an unrestrained child would hit the front seat (or windscreen) - and anyone in it - with a force between 30 and 60 times his/her own body weight.” They also advise that a car seat should never be fitted where there is an active front passenger air bag.
