Stonehaven Rotary report

Speaker at last week’s meeting was John Tracy who had worked in the police up to his retirement. His topic was the murders of three women in Dundee by Robert Mone in 1979 in which he had been involved as a detective. He described how the police go about investigating a crime and presented all the evidence to the Rotary club in his presentation leading up to the question of whether there was sufficient evidence to convict Robert Mone of the crime. The consensus was that there was—which in fact was what had actually happened. Robert Mone was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1979 for the murders of his aunt and two other women in Dundee, before dying in a knife attack in Craiginches Prison in 1983. Vote of thanks was by Rotarian Joe Samson.

Next weekend will be a busy one for members of Stonehaven Rotary Club. On Saturday 29 August, Ride the North, a 2 day 170 mile cycling event starting in Inverness, finishes up in Stonehaven when over 800 cyclists and all their supporters will descend on the town. Over the past 4 years this event has raised over £750,000 for different charities and this is the first time the event will finish in Stonehaven. The Recreation Grounds Trustees have made the whole of the Recreation grounds available and in conjunction with Stonehaven Rotary Club and Stonehaven Lions have organised refreshment stalls and other attractions to co-incide with the cyclists’ arrival on the promenade from 3pm onwards. Stonehaven Rotary will also be selling raffle tickets with the winning prize a mini car to raise funds for Clan.

On Sunday 30 August, Stonehaven Rotary will again be involved in the annual harbor festival. The main attraction at the festival this year will be an appearance of the Viking squad from the South Mainland of Shetland which was formed in 2010 and the Guyser Yarl for 2015 is Lesley Simpson the first woman to hold this most prestigious role. She is bringing a squad to the festival and they will march in procession behind the Newtonhill Pipe band. Stonehaven Rotary will be there with the always-popular “Kipper in a bun” stall and another opportunity to buy raffle tickets for the mini.

Stonehaven Rotary Club is organising a fundraising golf day on Friday 18 September from 10am to 3pm with the proceeds going to the Stonehaven Dialysis unit.
