School estate meetings to be held in New Year

Dates for upcoming community discussions on the future of Aberdeenshire’s schools estate into the New Year are now available.

In August last year, councillors approved the launch of an extensive consultation on Aberdeenshire schools which runs until February 2012.

The first stage of the process took the form of an online questionnaire which ran in August and September.

At a recent meeting, Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee (ELL) noted the response to the first stage of the consultation.

The committee went on to approve the second stage of the consultation, which is taking the form of a series of community-based stakeholder events in venues across Aberdeenshire.

These are based in part on feedback from the first stage and from a parent conference in November.

Education, Learning and Leisure Committee chair Cllr Richard Stroud said: “The response to the initial questionnaire was very encouraging and this second phase will provide the opportunity for local views to be explored in more detail.”

Committee vice-chair Cllr Isobel Davidson added: “The dates have been scheduled to avoid the festive fortnight but we’re keen to involve as many people as possible in this very wide-ranging exercise.”

A final report to the committee detailing the outcome of the full consultation is planned for March 2012.

There will be a meeting in Stonehaven Town Hall on Thursday, January 12 from 7-9pm.
