On Tuesday January 8, Stonehaven Ladies Probus Club met in their usual venue, The Station Hotel, for the first time since the Christmas break.
President, Ellie Mcleod welcomed the large gathering and introduced the speaker Graham Knight, who gave an intriguing talk entitled ‘Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll’. As a young lad he had been so excited by a film starring Jerry Lee Lewis that he skipped school in order to see every showing.
Some years later he met his idol who was touring in Britain, but who was expected to find his own transport from venue to venue.
Graham, who was working in Aberdeen at his father’s radio shop owned a mini and was prevailed upon to give Jerry a lift to the next venue. Thus began a lifelong friendship and entry to the world of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Over the following years he got to know most performers such as Little Richard, Elvis Presley and others. He gained an insight into their lives: their battles with drugs and alcohol and the demands of their lifestyles.
Later he was lucky enough to write the very first lengthy report of our own British performers, The Beatles.
A vote of thanks was given by the secretary Margaret Mulligan who also read out the apologies for absence.
The President followed this by mentioning the possibility of new club badges, proposed visits to see The Mousetrap, a Guided City Tour and the Grampian Transport Museum.
Finally an appeal was made for the victims of the flooding in Stonehaven. Seventy five properties have been affected and many people are having to lodge elsewhere. Anyone wishing to donate money should send it to Mr Bill Hunter, 13 Bernham Park, Stonehaven, AB39 2WE. Make cheques payable to Rotary Club of Stonehaven.
