West Aberdeenshire & Kincardine MP, Robert Smith, has welcomed Transport Scotland’s commitment to match the UK Government’s £50million pledge to help renew rolling stock for the Caledonian Sleeper fleet.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer made the funds available in his Autumn Statement on the condition the Scottish Government agreed to match the funding.
Following the recent launch of the Scottish Government’s Rail 2014 consultation fears had been raised for the future of direct day and sleeper services between Aberdeen and London.
Sir Robert said: “Just a few weeks ago the SNP’s own Transport Agency threatened the sleeper service. I am pleased that as Liberal Democrats in Government at Westminster we understood the value of the service and put money on the table to save sleeper service.
“This is a good result for the communities served by the sleeper service, now we have to ensure direct daytime services are maintained between Aberdeen and London.”
