Kincardine and Deeside Befriending has benefitted from a donation of £1000 from Stonehaven’s local SPAR.

The money was raised through the sale of single use carrier bags, which since October 2014 cost customers five pence each.

K & D Befriending is a local registered charity which aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness in older people throughout the Kincardine and Deeside area by matching them on a one to one basis with a volunteer befriender.

A regular visit from a befriender can provide companionship, practical and emotional support, and generally improve physical and mental wellbeing; in many cases, a carer also benefits from the welcome respite provided.

Brigitte Matthews, senior co - ordinator for Kincardine & Deeside Befriending, said: “Kincardine & Deeside Befriending depends on donations to sustain a much-needed befriending service. Therefore we are very grateful to SPAR for donating £1000 towards our running costs.”

Bill Christie, area manager for SPAR Scotland, said: “Staff in SPAR stores are delighted that the money raised from our carrier bag sales can be put to such good use with local charities”
