Stonehaven Sea Cadets celebrated their 60-year anniversary in traditional fashion at their annual dinner held in the Unit HQ last week.

This is an event where the adult volunteers, parents and supporters provide a meal for the cadets, following the Royal Naval custom and tradition, as a thank you for their efforts over the preceding year.

Guest of honour for 2014 was Unit President Dr Andrew Orr DL FRCGP, who is vice-lord lieutenant for Kincardinshire.

Dr Orr gave a speech regarding his membership of the Royal Company of Archers, who are the Queen’s bodyguards whenever she visits Scotland, and also spoke about his ancestor, Lieutenant (eventually Admiral) John Bythesea RN, who was awarded the Victoria Cross during the Crimean campaign in 1854.

As part of the proceedings, Dr Orr cut a commemorative cake to symbolise the 60th anniversary of the Sea Cadets in Stonehaven, having been commissioned in 1954.
