Town Council will contribute to some lighting repairs

BERWICK Town Council has agreed in principal to work in partnership with the county council to fix street lighting.

In order to get work carried out quickly, the council has agreed to part fund some repairs - but said it would judge every case on its own merits.

Following a meeting with those in charge of lighting at Northumberland County Council, Councillor John Robertson said: “The bottom line is if we want things to happen we may as a town council have to come forward and pay half the money towards it to make sure it happens.”

Members felt it was reasonable to contribute to lighting repairs where extra value would be added to the town, for example the Rotary Club Christmas lights on the Tweed Bridge, but that maintenance of street lighting was the county council’s responsibility.
