Tributes have been paid to well known local man and former teacher John Gavin who has passed away at the age of 83.

Mr Gavin was born on December 24, 1929, in Edinburgh, and moved to Angus in 1956 when he bought Muirhead Farm, near St Cyrus, in the November.

He farmed until 1969, when he went on to study teacher training in Dundee. In 1971, Mr Gavin went to Arbroath Academy to teach general science and biology. He retired in 1991.

He wed Edith Anderson in 1959 and they were married for 21 happy years until she died in 1981.

Mr Gavin was elder at the church for more than 40 years and set up and ran the St Cyrus Friendship Club -a social club which meets every Wednesday for lunch.

Kenneth Nichol, neighbour and friend, said: “We saw him every day and there’s no question that it will be strange not seeing him every day. Without a doubt he will be sorely missed.

“If anybody in the community had a problem, he would try and help them how he could. He would drive elderly people to the church who otherwise wouldn’t be able to get there.

“The church was packed at John’s funeral, everybody knew him. There’s a lot of folk he helped.”

Mr Gavin’s funeral was held at St Cyrus Church last Monday (August 12).
