REGISTRATION has started for the CLIC Sargent New Year’s Day Dip, which sees brave volunteers mark the first day of the year by charging in to the icy waters of Stonehaven Harbour – all in the name of raising money for charity.
This is the fourth year that the ‘dip with a nip’ has taken place at Stonehaven Harbour, and it has quickly become part of the traditional Stonehaven festive season, following on from the famous Hogmanay Fireballs the evening before.
Last year attracted 52 intrepid ‘dippers’, and raised £19,000 for CLIC Sargent, who support children with cancer in Scotland. But organisers are hoping to smash last year’s target, and have raised their aim to £22,000 for this year.
Each participant will be sent a welcome pack once they have registered, and they are asked to aim to raise at least £100 each in sponsorship.
Michael Hopkins, who has taken part every year and will this year lead the dippers in to the water after organising a rigorous and energetic warm-up routine, said: “As soon as I first heard about it I was willing to take part. I have done it as part of the Stonehaven and District Lions Club in previous years but this year I am doing it solo with a few friends.
“It’s a great atmosphere and a really good way of mingling with local people.”
CLIC Sargent’s Jo Robinson said: “It’s become part of the New Year celebrations. It’s good fun and it is for such a good cause.”
Refreshments such as soup and hot sausage rolls are provided by the Stonehaven and District Lions Club after the dip, which will take place at 2.30pm on New Years Day.
Mchael and Jo are on the lookout for anyone who can assist on the day to help to make it the most memorable dip to date, and are hoping to hear from volunteers who have a PA system and someone willing to be a compere on the day, which will add to the fun atmosphere.
Anyone who wants to get involved with this year’s New Year Dip can contact CLIC Sargent’s Jo Robinson on 01224 288960, or text ‘DIP’ to 07795022457 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
